Swim To Stay In Shape: Keep Your Body, Heart & Mind Healthy

Swimming is a great exercise option, regardless of what the weather may bring - as long as you have access to an indoor pool. It's a safe, fun and effective workout, appropriate for all ages -  both the young and the young at heart. Whether you are simply floating around the pool doing a few laps now and again, or choose to tackle a 1000 meter swim workout, everyone can reap the benefits of swimming.

The Best Full Body Workout

No matter what your favorite style, from dog-paddling to the backstroke, all of your muscles get a workout, including your heart. While the water provides buoyancy, it also provides resistance with a cushion you don’t have when running, walking, or doing other land-based activities. This makes it the perfect form of exercise for people with mobility issues, joint pain, heart conditions, and other health problems. Of course, just like any other exercise program, it is important to discuss your plans with your doctor before beginning.

Just 30 minutes each week of low-to-medium exertion swimming  burns up to 200 calories, and decreases risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and stroke. There are few other workout routines that are as enjoyable - and beneficial to your health - as swimming. If you’re trying to lose weight, improve muscle tone, or just up your overall fitness level, this may be the perfect exercise choice for you.

It's Good For Your Mental Health Too

We all experience stress to some degree on most days, and occasionally that stress reaches maximum levels. When that happens, it’s the perfect time to head to the pool. There’s just something about the weightlessness one experiences as the water gently soothes your nerves that helps to wash away your troubles. When you add swimming laps, you're sure to work out any frustration that’s building up in your mind and body, providing a release that can truly help get you through the rest of the day.

Try to work in a 30-minute session at least once a week to help stay fit. If you up that to three times a week, you’ll reap even more benefits. Give it a try - you have nothing to lose but risk of disease, excess weight, and stress.
