Tips for Playing Golf in Cooler Temperatures

While you may still have a few warm days left in the season, cooler rounds are right around the corner for all of us in the Midwest. We’ve put together a few tips that might come in handy when you visit our golf club in Lake Geneva, WI.

Don’t Leave Your Golf Bag in the Car

Although leaving your golf bag in your car might save you a little time, leaving your clubs there for an extended period is not a good idea. Cold weather adversely affects your clubs and your golf balls. The material on your grips contracts in the cold which can cause cracks to appear in the grips, and the graphite shafts become brittle and less flexible. The balls themselves are also affected by something called the coefficient of thermal expansion – in short, they will carry about two yards less for every 10 degree drop in temperature.

Dress Appropriately

In the fall, temperatures change quickly, which is why layering is the way to go. For your base layer, trade your short-sleeve polo for a long-sleeve performance shirt. Next, select a performance pullover that minimizes airflow. It’s great for staying warm and is thin enough so as not to affect your swing – and it doesn’t take up a lot of room in your golf bag – a plus if you walk your rounds. Lastly, add a moisture-wicking vest or jacket – especially on windy days. For extra comfort, wearing rain pants over your regular pants will keep you comfortable when it’s windy, and they are easy to remove if you get too warm. If it’s really cold trade, your regular hat for a beanie since you lose most of your body heat through the top of your head. Finally, don’t wear the same shoes that worked well when the ground was warm and soft. Choose a shoe with replaceable cleats, and change them before you play your first round of cold-weather golf. Poor traction increases your chances for injury.

Walk to Stay Warm and Leave the Flask Behind

Your body loses mobility when the temperature drops below 59 degrees Fahrenheit, and you start to lose dexterity and flexibility in your hands. The best way to maintain your temperature is to keep moving, and the best way to do that is to walk your rounds – which increases your blood flow and prevents your muscles from getting stiff. Just remember to drink plenty of water because it’s easy to forget in the cooler weather. Lastly, leave the alcohol for later – even one drink lowers your core body temperature.

Adjust Your Game During Colder Weather at Abbey Springs Golf Club in Lake Geneva, WI

A couple more things to keep in mind – the ball doesn’t travel as far in cold weather, your swing may be hampered by bulkier clothes, and as the weather gets colder, the ground gets harder. These are all important things to keep in mind when selecting your clubs and thinking about your swing at Abbey Springs Golf Club in Lake Geneva, WI. We look forward to seeing you soon!
